How the filament cost is calculated

Everything comes from one number: what you paid per gram of plastic.

cost per gram = spool price ÷ net filament weight
print cost = grams used × cost per gram
real cost = print cost × (1 + waste%) ÷ (1 − failure%)

If you only know the length a print uses, the calculator converts meters to grams using the filament's cross-section and density:

grams per meter = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × density
1.75 mm PLA: π × 0.875² × 1.24 ≈ 2.98 g/m

That's why PLA works out to roughly 3 g per meter and a 1 kg spool holds about 335 m. Denser materials like PETG pack slightly more grams into each meter; lighter ones like ABS and polypropylene hold more meters per kilogram.

Worked example

A 1 kg spool of PLA cost $22. Your slicer says a print uses 65 g.

  • Cost per gram: $22 ÷ 1000 g = $0.022
  • Print material: 65 g × $0.022 = $1.43
  • With 5% waste and a 5% failure rate: $1.43 × 1.05 ÷ 0.95 = $1.58

Fifteen cents doesn't sound like much on one print. Across a hundred prints it's the difference between a spool lasting the month or not.

Getting the inputs right

Use the net weight, not the gross

A "1 kg" spool has 1,000 g of filament wound on a spool that itself weighs 150–250 g. The label weight is the filament. If you weigh a full spool on a kitchen scale you'll see 1,150–1,250 g — don't type that in, or every cost will come out 15–25% low. Where to find the grams a print uses

Every mainstream slicer reports it after slicing: PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer in the right-hand sidebar under "Filament", Bambu Studio in the preview's summary, Cura in the bottom-right corner next to the time estimate. The figure includes supports, brims and purge towers. It does not include the purge line most start G-code draws before the print, which is why a few percent of waste is realistic even when nothing goes wrong.

What counts as waste

Purge lines, the bit you snip off when loading, filament ground up by a jam, the skirt you didn't count, and the ten first-layer attempts before it stuck. Five percent is a fair default for a well-tuned printer; a machine still being dialled in is nearer ten.

Prices are typical retail for 1 kg spools of mainstream brands and move with sales and bulk deals; treat them as a sanity check for your own number, not a quote.

What this number doesn't cover

Material is usually the smallest part of what a print really costs. A six-hour print on a $400 printer with a 3,000-hour life has burned $0.80 of the machine, a few cents of electricity, and however much of your time it took to slice, remove and clean up. Frequently asked questions

How much does 3D printer filament cost per gram?

Divide the spool price by its net weight. A 1 kg spool of PLA at $20 is 2 cents per gram, so a 50 g print costs about $1 in material. Budget PLA runs roughly $0.015–0.025/g, PETG and ABS $0.018–0.03/g, TPU $0.025–0.04/g, and carbon-fiber nylon $0.05–0.08/g.

How many meters of filament are in a 1 kg spool?

It depends on density and diameter. For 1.75 mm: PLA about 335 m, PETG about 327 m, ABS about 400 m, TPU about 344 m. For 2.85 mm PLA it is about 126 m. The calculator shows grams per meter for the material you pick.

Does the slicer's filament estimate include supports and brims?

Yes — the total in PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio and Cura includes supports, brims, skirts and purge/wipe towers. What it doesn't include is the purge line at the start of the print, filament you cut off when loading, and prints that fail partway. That's what the waste and failure-rate fields are for.

Why add a failure rate?

If one print in ten fails, every successful print effectively used 1/(1−0.10) = 111% of its material. The calculator divides by (1 − failure rate) so the cost you see is the real average, not the best case.
